PRP treatments are now being used as a hair restoration treatment.
PRP treatments are used for a variety of purposes in the medical field. Here at ReShape LLC, we utilize PRP (platelet-rich plasma) therapy primarily for hair loss. This treatment is believed to trigger natural hair growth and increase the thickness of the hair because it works to increase blood supply to the follicle. PRP treatments for other conditions has been in use since the 1980s and although it is in its infancy as a hair restoration treatment, we expect a promising future for this revolutionary treatment.
PRP treatments involve drawing your blood, putting it into a centrifuge for approximately 10 minutes to separate it into platelet-rich plasma, platelet-poor plasma, and red blood cells, and then injecting just the platelet-rich plasma into the scalp where hair growth is desired. This is usually repeated over three visits during a one to two-month period and repeated every four to six months thereafter for maintenance purposes.
Since it is your own blood, there is no risk of a communicable disease as there can be with other methods. Most people are excellent candidates for PRP treatments, although it is recommended you do not have it done if you are on blood thinners, have a history of drug or alcohol misuse, or you smoke heavily.
If you would like to know more about PRP treatments, including being evaluated to determine if you would be a good candidate, give us a call to schedule a consultation at our Mooresville, North Carolina medical spa. We will be happy to go over the process and what you can expect during the PRP treatments and beyond.
